20 uses of wood dust
Here at Firewood of Tasmania, we have a Zero-Waste policy which means we endeavour to utilise all aspects of the wood collection and preparation process. One by-product we offer our loyal customers is Wood Dust, commonly called saw dust.
Whilst most think of this product as waste, Wood Dust is actually highly absorbent and extremely versatile having many uses around the home, garden and more.
Firewood of Tasmania offers you confidence that none of our products contain chemicals - which means there is zero harmful risk to plants, animals or humans.
As a safety precaution, we recommend always wearing a mask to avoid breathing in the Wood Dust and harming the lungs, and to avoid irritation to the eyes.
Here are 20 innovative ways you can use our Wood Dust.
Animal bedding: Wood Dust provides a comfortable and cozy place for animals and pets to sleep and is useful for livestock, poultry, rabbits and other pets.
Cat litter: Highly absorbent. Excellent odour control. Light weight. Easy to scoop soiled waste. Wood Dust is a recommended product for your litter boxes.
Soil amendment: An excellent long-lasting alternative, our Wood Dust will help build organic matter in your soil, especially hard, compacting and clay-rich soil.
Compost: Wood Dust works wonderfully as the ‘brown’ component in compost and creates fluffy bulk to support oxygen flow. Alternate with ‘green’ material.
Gardening: Sprinkle around fruit trees, over strawberry, tomato and potato plants. Use as slug control. Store root crops and bulbs in Wood Dust. Plus more.
Soak up spills: Sprinkle a generous amount of Wood Dust over the spilt liquid. Let it absorb for at least 15 minutes. Sweep up, bag and correctly dispose.

Dispose of paint: Never pour toxic material down the drain. Instead tip sawdust into the cans and let sit, uncovered, until paint solidifies and hardens.
Weed suppressor: Add a layer of cardboard, newspaper, old clothing or wool before covering, thickly, with Wood Dust to retain moisture but prevent weeds.
Dry fresh wood: Not only is Wood Dust absorbent, it is also very dry which makes it a perfect drying agent for freshly milled wooden boards.
Create a garden path: Simply sprinkle Wood Dust over dirt paths to create fantastic weed-free and robust garden walkways that are soft and quiet underfoot.
